Montgomery County, Maryland
Rabbi Yitzchak taught that “A ruler is not to be appointed unless the community is consulted.”
— Babylonian Talmud Berachot 55a
Montgomery County needs leaders who will represent all of us, and who are accountable to the whole community. That’s why we vote, and why we take seriously Rabbi Yitzchak’s teaching that community input is essential for choosing who will lead our county.
And it’s why the JUFJ Campaign Fund was founded — to help elect leaders who will fight for our Jewish values, to advocate for issues that matter to the whole Montgomery County community, and to hold our representatives to the commitments they make.
The JUFJ Campaign Fund is proud to endorse

Fatmata Barrie for County Council, At-Large
Fatmata Barrie is an immigration attorney, a supporter of housing justice, and an advocate for fairer taxation. She was a JUFJ Campaign Fund endorsee four years ago, and she has consistently demonstrated her shared values and thoughtful leadership since then. We are looking forward to working alongside her to ensure everyone in our county has the resources they need to live with dignity — from a home they can afford to a school system that treats all students with the care they need.

Laurie-Anne Sayles for County Council, At-Large
Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles was a JUFJ Campaign Fund endorsee four years ago, when she won her current At-Large seat on the County Council. She has voted in alignment with nearly all of our positions during the past four years, including on eviction prevention, immigrant justice, and police accountability. Councilmember Sayles’ consistent demonstration of her values through her Council votes has been critical to many of our coalitions’ victories over the past four years.

Debbie Spielberg for County Council, District 1
Debbie Spielberg has an extensive background in Montgomery County governance, working for over 15 years with Marc Elrich as a Council staffer and special assistant to the County Executive. We have worked with her to raise the minimum wage, create protections for our immigrant neighbors, fund eviction prevention, and pass permanent rent stabilization.
Her experience will serve her well in forwarding our coalitions’ key priorities like housing for all, fair treatment of kids in schools, and a tax system that makes sure the wealthy pay their fair share for county services. When there are tough decisions to make, she will rely on the Jewish values that she learned from her mother, who was rescued from Germany as a child by the Kindertransport.

Izola Shaw for County Council, District 3
Rockville City Councilmember Izola Shaw is a champion of housing justice, workers’ rights, and real public safety who has consistently demonstrated a commitment to our shared values in the fight for social, racial, and economic justice. She has deep roots in the community as a long-time organizer and activist, working alongside JUFJ and coalition partners to raise the minimum wage, pass rent stabilization, fund eviction prevention programs, build strong unions, and protect our immigrant community. For years, she has been at the forefront of Montgomery County’s efforts to address systemic racial inequities that harm Black residents, especially young people.
The work to dismantle antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, and other forms of oppression are tied together, and “with thoughtfulness and care, Izola Shaw has taken the time to learn from Jewish allies how the machinery of division targets Jews and is a threat to all marginalized communities,” says Rabbi David Shneyer of Rockville. “Her engagement of Jewish constituents in Rockville and her longtime relationship with Jews United for Justice show her commitment to the values of solidarity and relationship building that are key to keeping us all safe.”
